IMPORTANCE REALIZED
Safeguarding Panama Canal
(Received August 30, 8.15 p.m.) LONDON, August 29.
In the course of a speech at the Guildhall, the American Ambassador in London, Mr. Winaut, referred to the importance of Central and bouth America to the United Nations cause, and also stressed the strategic importance of the I’anama Canal. The United States, he said, had always recognized the safeguarding of the canal as absolutely the initial condition for the defence of the American Continent. It was of the greatest importance that all countries in close proximity to the canal should act in unison in face of any extefnal dangers and. he added, he hoped and believed that collaboration and solidarity among the American republics and between them and the rest of the freedom-loving nations would continue after the present dangers had passed.
