JUNGLE BATTLE

New Threat In New Guinea FRESH LANDING AT MILNE BAY LONDON, August 30. Though American marines are officially stated to be in control of six islands in the Solomons, the position in the Milne Bay area of New Guinea has obviously deteriorated for the Allies in the past 12 hours. A correspondent says that a great jungle battle has been raging for the past four days, and that ground fighting has increased in intensity. Early reports of the fighting at Milne Bay following the Japanese landing were encouraging, but the situation may now well be described as grave. Under cover of extremely bad weather, the Japanese have succeeded in massing reinforcements which have pushed their way into the jungle sufficiently far to challenge all the Allied positions in the area.

The arrival of a second Japanese naval force at Milne Bay came as a surprise. Efforts were made to attack the force, but the weather was so bad that American bombers failed to locate the ships.
