TAXI CONTROL SCHEME
Success In Wellington
Good results have come from tlie system of taxi control recently put’into operation by the Wellington TfiSl Control Committee to conserve tyres and petrol, according to the. chfiirmam Mr. V. M. Mitchell. It. is not, however, claimed to he perfect, for some drivers had apparently not yet realized their responsibilities or had been dodging tlieir obligations. Action, he said, was being taken to deal witli (hem. Few essential jobs had had to wait, and those mostly at peak times. The committee was pleased with the cooperation it had received from the companies. the public, aud the majority of taxi operators.
Mr. Mitchell mentipned two ways in which tlie public could help. First, by telephoning tlieir requirements as early as possible, and secondly, by refraining from trying to deceive the taxi telephone operators. Priority was given to essential work, ho explained, hut it was not necessary for the call to be for a maternity ease or a funeral to receive attention. Cars were available for much of the normal taxi service, subject, or course, to the reduced petrol ration.
