Servicemen who spent their weekend,' leave in Wellington were well accommodated. All Hie service clubs provided welcome relaxation, concerts and dances being popular entertainment mediants. Men visiting the new Combined Services ifos'tel in Dixon Street for the first t.me wore warmly appreciative of. the inuny comforts at. their disposal, and approved the coupon system which has been adopted. It is estimated that more .than 2uo made use of the sleeping facilities'* provides! at both the Dixon Street, and Sydnev Street hostels, and the help given by tlie W.W.S.A. in sending voluntary aides- to-make, the beds was of considerable assistance to the male staff al Dixou Street, which is, as yet, working with a initiinium of members.
Tile A.N.A. Club’s dances were very well attended throughout the week, the ballroom being crowded to capacity on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Musical items were played on guitars by Electrician Simile, Newton Diften-wbi-th, and Private Bo Kalm. Private James Chambers sang popular vocal solos. With tlie increased numbers ot men availing tliciuseives of tlie meals served it is apparent that the supply of club cutlery is inadequate. Knives arc particularly required, and the cafeteria committee would bu very grateful to any citizen or group of, citizens who would forward some to the dull, 33 AV HllB Street. Sincere thanks are extended to ■'Mother of Two Soldiers,"■ Manawatu, and Mrs. Pyeroft, Willis Street, for gifts of iron boilers. Welcome gifts of provisions have been received from country organizations: The Olaki and Te Horo Women’s Emergency Committee, per Miss ,M. Clarke and Mrs. LI. B. Blackburn, w'lieli forwarded a monthly hamper of eakes: the Masterton Women’s Welfare League, per Mrs. -A. Carruthers, a hamper of- provisions; Iho Mauriceville and Iliuranu branch, W'.D.F.U., per Miss Edna Dagg, 3 cases of assorted provisions and vegetables: the Ilawera W.W.S.A.', per Mrs. C. IL Stevens, 2 cases of eggs and 2 sacks of vegetables; and the Victoria College Students’ Asso-. ciation, which sent a donation of cakes. Crowds of servicemen danced to the music of the Rhythm. Trio .at the Victory Club. Sergeant Glen Prestige and Mr. IL Morton were M.C.'s, and Mrs. Anderson, Miss N. Sparkes, and Miss V,. Sparkes were tlie official hostesses. Thanks are extended to Mrs: Simpson, Misses Jean and Mavis Rae, Jean Day and Nancy’ Gibson for- assistance. The extras were played by Misses Marjorie Pegrain.lind Rose Menncll, Wanganui'. Tlie temporary liome of Webby's Club, in Miss Kathleen O’Connor’s studio, was: filled.. with enthusiastic dancers, all eager to make new friends, and renew old acquaintances. ■ Douglas Roche and his band, supplemented by visiting • musicians, played tlie music, . and novelty items were featured. Yesterday the club hostesses on duty prepayed tea, after which dancing was continued to music supplied by Mr. a’nd Mrs. Pember. ’lhe activities of Webby's Club will be carried on through the courtesy of Miss Kathleen O’Connor, at her studio of dancing, directly opposite The temporary hourq are from 7 p.m. onward on Saturdays, and from- 2.30 p.m. on Sundays.
The National Club was packed on, Saturday night, when the National Union entertained men of ihe Services. Hisses Elza Martin and Shirley Spears headed the many willing helpers who attended and hot. meals were served, followed by dancing and music. Yesterday Mrs. Guy Johnston, vice-president of the National Club, assisted by a team of members, served hot meals and morning and afternoon teas. ltrs. A. S. Morley's culinary contributions were, as usual, much appreciated; Tlie Rev. Ashley I’etcli presided at the Wellington Y.M.C.A.’s weekly tea for soldiers last night. Mr. Martin was Ihe •associate chairman aud Mesdames Fetch and Slartin were special guests. Helpers from the Tiirnnnki Street, Brooklyn, anil Aro Street Methodist Churches, convened by Mrs. Vernon, were on duty ami a concert which included items by Mesdanies Wilfred Andrews, Khiill, and MacAlister, Miss Sutherland, and Mr. H. Hindle, was enjoyed. Community singing led by Mr. Hindle, with Mr. Wood’ at the piono, was also held. The Cindella Chib had a very busy weekend. On Friday night dancing and a savoury supper were enjoyed. The rooms were bright with spring flowers yesterday and a delicious hot tea was served, tlie vegetables being supplied by the W.W.S.A. Aitken Street gardens. Music’ for dancing was played by Mrs. Allen aud Mr. Nippelt. Girls on duty during the weekend were: Misses K. Crist, I’. Cross, Joyce Allen, A. Arbon, J. Rust, A. Engstrom. A. Outtrim and M. Cawley. Rival teams from two ships competed in a seamen’s football match last week, sponsored by the British Sailors’ Society. Tlicy were entertained at tlie society's clubrooms after the game and given hot ten ami a film screening. A party of seamen was taken on a tramping trip on Saturday, ami after viewing Wellington from the lookout on Mt. Victoria returned in time for a ten of scrambled eggs and apples and cream. .Mr. W. Thomas acted ns M.C. at tlie social which followed, and visiting seamen gave Fijian and Hawaiian songs mid dances. Mr. W. F. Curie was (lie guest speaker at tlie Sunday service, and the hostesses. .Misses M. Fenton mid M. Smith, served tlie tea provided by members of tlie 8.5.5., Ladies' Guild ami friends. A supper, donated by tlie Wesley Fireside Group, was served yesterday and a concert was staged by tlie Elizabeth McCombs drama circle. A minister from the Y.M.C.A. lint nt mi Air Force station conducted the service. The association is grateful for the supply of vegetable's received from the W.W.S.A.
