OBITUARY

Mr. J. Darling

Mr. Janies Darling, chief engineer for the Kelburne and Karori Tramway Company, who resided at No. 3 Rawhiti derraee, Wellington, died yesterday morning after an illness extending over several weeks. Mr. Darling,.who.was a wellknown resident of Wellington, was born in Galashiels, Scotland, and served ms time as an engineer on the Clyde. He later went to sea for some years as an engineer and finally came ashore at Wellington in 1901, to accept'rhe position of engineer for the newly-«>rmed Kelburne and Karori Tramway Company, which had built its cable line to connect with the lands the company was opening up on the western hills. He later became manager, a position he held until his death. Mr Darling was a foundation member of‘the Kelburn Tennis Club, of which he was vice-president for a number ot years. He was also keenly interested m harriers, and was for many years vicepresident of the Scottish club. . He was a past-president of the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers. Mr. Darling also took a deep interest in educational matters, and was chairman of the Terrace School Committee. His kindly nature endeared him to a wide circle of friends, and his sound judgment was often sought on matters that concerned the community. lie leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Miller, wife of Dr. T. Miller, of Thames, and two sons, Mr. Keith Darling, also on the engineering staff of the Kelburne and Karori Tramway Company, and Mr. M. Darling, who is associated with the woo! business. Mr. Edward Bull Mr. Edward Bull, a well-known member of a pioneer family, died at his residence, Fraud! Street, Goldies Brae, on Wednesday, aged 76 years. He was a son of Mr. Edward Bull, who was eo-editor and one of the proprietors of “The New Zealand Advertiser,” and “Bull’s Wellington Almanack,” published in Parish Street, in the late ’so's of last century. Ilis mother, who was born in Wellington in 1843, was one, of the first pair of white twins born in New Zealand. He attended “Dicky” Holmes’s school at To Aro, and after leaving school entered the employ of J. Kitchen and Sons, soap manufacturers, who had a large plant near the present site of the Wellington Hospital in Revans Street, Newtown, in the ’Bo's. In .1893 he joined the staff of the New Zealand Candle Company, which, in 1894. bought out the business of J. Kitchen and Sous. Of the enlarged company, Mr. Bull became secretary and manager, and subsequently, managing director. This business was later acquired by Lever Bros, (of which firm Mr. Bull was then a local director). He retired from active business seven years ago. Mr. Bull was a popular member of the ■Wellington Rotary Club and the Thorndon Bowling Club, and was a director of the Wainui-o-Mata Development Company. He was a foundation member of the Poncke Football Club, and was a vice-president of it to the time of his death. He leaves a family of two sons, Messrs. lan and Ronald Bull, Wellington, and three daughters, Mesdames J. R. Hughes, Palmerston North, F. Raymond, Hamilton, and Miss Ida Bull.
