JAP FAILURE

Solomons Bid Not Ended PAPUA BATTLE CONTINUES , (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON,. August 28. The United States Navy Department in a communique yesterday announced that the Japanese surface forces have withdrawn from the Tulagi area in the Solomon Islands. American naval circles assume- that the Solomon Islands battle has so far gone in favour of the American forces, but at the same time it is clearly recognized that the Japanese may launch a fresh attack very soon. The United Press of America‘says that though during the forenoon the Navy has had no news of the progress of the Solomons battle it is believed that a powerful Japanese naval striking force is still trying to break through the American defences in spite of the withdrawal of another enemy fleet, which was composed of transports and escorting warships. In New Guinea the land fighting is developing at Milne Bay, where the Japanese landed on Wednesday. Overhead Allied and Japanese planes are fighting it out, while other Allied planes are keeping up attacks against the enemy supplies and barges.
