DIFFICULT TO ENSURE OBSERVANCE
Licensing Regulations
The difficulties facing hotelkeepers in ensuring the strict observance of the provisions of the licensing law and the new licensing regulations were described by the manager of a large Wellington hotel when giving evidence in a case in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday. He said he had specially engaged a commissionaire to' supervise the entrance and actions of people visiting and receiving service at the hotel. Except for occasionally calling taxis for guests, these were his sole duties. He had been given powers to question persons entering and leaving the hotel, even guests, and had special instructions to see that no liquor was carried off the premises in closing hours.
The manager said that one of the great difficulties was the number of youths under 21 who were in khaki nowadays, It had beer found necessary’ to make a practice of asking tlie soldiers for their pay books when in doubt as to whether -they were of legal age to be supplied with drink.
