OBITUARY

Lieut.-Col. J. Armstrong

The death has occurred following a long illness of Lieutenant-Colonel James Armstrong, Dannevirke. He was educated at the Bishop’s School, Nelson, and also at Nelson College, from where he went to Otago University to study medicine, and later to University Col ege, London. On his return to New Zealand in 1905 he took up a sheep farm at Glengarry, aud afterward acquired Maungataniwha station, Wairoa. which he owned at the time of nis death. During his stay in London he joined the King's Colonial Yeomanry, and on his return to New Zealand he commanded L Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles with the rank of captain. During the Great War he saw service in Egypt with the Eighth Reinforcements as captain and 1 was promoted to major while on ser- ’ vice. On returning to New Zealand he commanded the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was a prominent footballer, representing Nelson College, Otago University and Otago province in the position of half-back. He later represented the Umvcrsity. College School, London. Lieutenant-Colonel Armstrong was the first President of the Dannevirke Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a former member of the Waipawa and the Dannevirke County Councils, and also a past master of Lodge Rawhiti. He was keenly interested in racing and for. several years was President of the Dannevirke Racing Club and was also a member of the Hawke’s Bav Racing Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference.. As a racing owner his colours were carried successfully -by The Speaker, Chicane, Nita and Chatterer. . Lieutenant-Colonel Armstrong leaves a widow, one son, R. A. Armstrong, R.N.Z.A.F., and two daughters, Airs. Humphrey Bayly, Nuhakn, and Miss Judith Armstrong, Dannevirke. There is one brother,' Mr. Frank Armstrong, Akitio, and two sisters, Mrs. E. Wardell, Masterton ,and Mrs. M. Henry, Auckland.
