MILITARY SERVICE

Number Of Men Drawn So Far APPEALS INCREASE

Though comparative figures are not available as to the number of appeals rsulting from all recent 'ballots for military service, the marked diminution of available manpower in industry is reflected in tiie percentage of appeals from the latest ballot compared with those from the initial territorial ballots. About 25 per cent, of the reservists were appealed for in the early ballots, but the figure has soared in the meantime to approximately 60 per cent, in the last 'ballot gazetted. It Is generally conceded that men in the age groups now being called are in positions of greater responsibility and have had a wider trade experience than the younger men called in the early ballots. However, the complexion and character af industry has altered markedly in recent months and the change over from non-essential to essential manufacturing has made it necessary for • employers, in the interests of production, to appeal for men who would not have lieen viewed as key men in the circumstances previously ruling. Sixteen ballots have teen gazetted, five being specifically for overseas service. Of the remainder 10 related to terirtorial service and the ballot published on June 24 was for general service in the armed forces. In the five overseas ballots 80,509 reservists were gazetted for service, of whom 10,789 were resident in tiie No. 5 (Wellington) area. The 10 territorial ballots, together with the ballot on June 24, produced a total of 160,937 men. of whom 21,566 lived in the Wellington area. A number of men drawn originally in territorial ballots were drawn ngain later in overseas ballots.
