NEW DISTURBANCES IN CALCUTTA

Assam’s War Co-operation

(Received August 25, 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 24.

The Viceroy has summoned both Chambers of the Central India Legislature to meet in Delhi on September 14 instead of at the end of October, to discuss the situation which has developed in India. The police in Bombay today dispersed a procession marching toward the High Court. Disturbances broke out again tn Calcutta after four quiet days, but the police took: strong measures. The important Indian province of Assam, on the north-east frontier, which since the end of 1941 lias been a “governor’s province," returns tomorrow to responsible government and full co-operation in the United Nations’ war effort, states a communique issued by the Governor of Assam. It states that Sir Mahomed Saadullah has intimated to the Governor that he is in a position to form a Ministry which will command the confidence of the Legislature. With the concurrence of the Governor-General, the Government of India has intimated its readiness to agree to this course. A communique from air headquarters in New Delhi says that during an offensive operation over north-west Burma last Thursday a Japanese fighter was shot down by R.A.F. planes. Other R.A.F. planes dive-bombed buildings in the enemy-occupied town of Mawleik, in the Chindwin Valley. Direct hits were scored. Chungking radio said today that General Chiang Kai-shek has sent a message to the Chinese expeditionary force in India paying a high tribute to their conduct during the Burmese campaign. He called on the Chinese troops in India to avoid any criticism, or discussion of India’s political affairs.
