ENEMY COLLAPSE IN KIANGSI

Guerrilla Defence Shows Results NORTHWARD RETREAT

(By Telegraph.—Press Assn,—Copyright.) (Received August 25, 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, August 24.

It is officially announced in Chungking that the Chinese have captured Linchwan, the second most important Japanese base in central Kiangsi. The military spokesman said that the Japanese forces had been driven from 11 important towiis in tiie last week and wore retreating to Manchukno “like hungry dogs, fatigued, starved, and sick, and so short of munitions that they cannot fight even a rearguard action.”

Guerrilla activities have deprived the Japanese of food and munition supplies, and have played an important part in the enemy’s collapse. The American bombing of Japanese targets has boosted Chinese morale. Following the recapture of Linchwan, the main body of the Chinese forces has now moved north in pursuit of the Japanese. The Chinese have also retaken several strategic points near the Kiangsi-Chekiang border.

The Central Chinese news agency reports that the Chinese have recaptured Changshap, 25 miles north-west of Chuhsien. The Chinese are converging on Chuhsien from the east and north-east.
