CHINESE SURGE

Maintained In East

(Received August 24, 11.50 p.m.)

CHUNGKING, August 23.

Closely pressing the retreating Japanese forces, the Chinese have recaptured Kiangshan, Huangchinpu and Yukiang, thus broadening their hold on the Kiangsi-C'hekiang railroad to more than 40 miles, according to the Central news agency.

Driving eastward, the Chinese have crossed the border of Chekiang Province in three columns and are engaging the enemy south-west of Kiangshan. The Japanese have been forced to withdraw from Kiangshan, burning the city as they left. The Chinese are thus within 20 miles of Chuhsien, a potential United States air base, which was one of the chief Japanese objectives when they started the midsummer campaign in the coastal provinces.
