SMALL CHANGE
Shortage In Wellington
“There is a definite shortage of the smaller coins in Wellington,” said au official of one of the leading banks yesterday. “Fennies and threepenny pieces are specially short, and we are at a loss to account for it.” He agreed that there might be something in an Auckland suggestion that patriotic collecting-boxes might account for the disappearance of many such coins from active circulation, and that rises in prices of articles from 3d. to 4d. and from 6d. to 7d. might have a good deal to do with it, too. Some Wellington business houses report that they find much difficulty in maintaining’ a sufficient supply of small change to carry on their cash trading. In normal times they used to carry over considerable quantities of small coins from day to day, but now are only able to start the day with hand-to-mouth quantities. Customers do not seem to have the odd penny or two that makes up the required price, so that copper is going out faster than it goes in all the time.
