More Service Clubs Report A Busy Weekend
.More than 750 servicemen visited the Spinsters’ Club entertainment in the Majestic Cabaret on Sunday, there being a total of 1000 visitors altogether. Members served tea at the small tobies round the dance floor, and when items were presented later on, every vantage point was crowded with onlookers, who "are the performers warm applause. Mrs. Merle Gamble and Mr. D. Gamble sang, accompanied by a naval visitor, J. Buchanan, and members of the Brooklyn R S A. presented a burlesque number, “Ballet d'Armentieres.” Those taking part were Messrs. J. and D. Hood, R Staples, A. Trouton, G. Tynan, F. Wilde. D. Sutherland, aud H. Simmons. Mr. Tynan also sang. Chief Petty Officer Dunham gave tap dances. An orchestra played for dancing, assisted by visiting servicemen. w _ . _ T Thre’d members of the Y.W.C.A. Hospitality Club were guests of honour. The Hutt Valley Services Club, run by the women's section of the R.5.A.,. again catered for a large number of servicemen at the weekend. The hostesses were members of the Federation of Women’s Institutes executive, with Mrs. Price as convener. Delicious meals were served, aud the club thanks all those who sent gifts of meat, milk, fuel. etc. Saturday's dance was popular, and on Sunday night a programme, arranged by Mrs. S. Wood, was much appreciated. Among the artists were Miss Valmai Hunt, dance. Mr. Swain, solo, and an amusing sketch given by Sirs. R. B. Ashe, president of
the club. Community singing was led. by Mr. J. Kyle. Air. Mann was at the piano, and thanks are due to Mr. Fawcett, who was at the door. The Grosvenor Cluo proved popular with servicemen at the weekend, and applause was accorded Dorothy Seymour s concert party, which gave a fine programme. Dancing was interspersed with items, the winners of the Monte Carlo being Miss N. Vaney and Gunner Shumark. Voluntary helpers included; Mesdames Scott, Gordon, Harris, Devery, Coombe; Misses Shakespeare, N. Vaney, M. Cooper, S. Dampney, M. Maynard, V. Richardson, P. and J. Leith, B. Ives, G. Roper, J. Heiford, N. Finlay. The Cinderella Club members were kept busy during the weekend entertaining crowds of visiting servicemen. On Friday night the usual informal dance was held and a delicious savoury supper was served. Extras were played by two visitiu<- servicemen. Ou Saturday night the monthly dance was held. Bombardier and Mrs. Allen gave an exhibition of a quickstep and a modern waltz. On Sunday the clubrooms were again opened aud a hot tea was supplied. Mrs. Allen provided music Girls on duty during the weekend were: Misses ». Fordham, M. Thom, E. McFarland, D. Huggins, N. Worsdale, N. White. BBlackie, G. Gould, B. Thomas and 1. Harrington. More than 100 seamen were present at the British Sailors’ Society rooms in M ellington the other evening, when an enjoyable concert was given by the Ngat l ' Poneke Maori party, uuder Lieut. Lahiwi Several entertainments were staged during the week to benefit the society s funds, ah afternoon programme being contributed by the Karon Lyne Choir. Saturday’s social was arranged by members of the Mornington Baptist Church. Mr. L. Jones (Merchant Navy) and Jims P. Stewart also gave items. Mr. L. ■M. Johansen conducted the Sunday service, which was followed by a programme of orchestral and vocal music. Thanks are given to students of the- Wellington Girl.College, who have knitted and donated a number of woolleu garments expressly lor merchant seamen.
