FINAL TRIALS National Candidates ’ Tune Up BY Telegraph. —From The Watcher. CHRISTCHURCH, August 0. .Most interest in the iinal trials at Rteearton this morning was taken m toe programme allotted tlie National favourite, Foxiaua, but he was not sent over the National country, bis trainer helng satisfied to give him a school over eight ot tho fences inside the track. Golden .Memory went every bit as well as Hoste Bov. Cherry Plum was better than luraki and Roddy over a round, and gave a Phasing display. Roddy screwed badly at tue last fence. Cutts', and was broken down on pulling up. Cults’ fence also stopped Clansman, who came to the take-off clear of Aussie Ra and at the last moment ducked off to the inner and crashed into the wing, throwing his rider. 1). J. Burgess, over tile tup. Aussie Ra jumped the tence well, and but for Clansman's baulk It was a good display. Neither the horse nor the rider came to any harm. Sureoat, who is looked upon by many as one of t he best South Island jumpers, gave a good display , going albne. Ni'glit Hawk and Sir Hug also bungled Cults’ fence. Hurdlers School. * Over the'hurdle?. Authoress gave a '<- r 5 smart display over' six jumps, beating Alienate to and over the obstacles each time, but Alienate is not a good track worker. Native Song and Nuturoa jumped four hurdles safely, Native Song jumping well. Strip and Distress Signal did a similar task. The Gallopa. , .. All the last galloping was done on tne outside of the course proper, which provided excellent goirir. Most of the horses at the meeting were worked, but there v,as not much of an outstautlHig nature. Compeer Pleases. u Compeer was responsible for a ' er pleasing effort, as he appeared to have it on Boloyna at the end of seven, though Boloyna was going the better a 9 they entered the straight. The time was l.o«5*» tile last half in 5-« ‘ Sa Sall.v U £unn worked freely over six in 1.19, the last half in 51, and was going strongly at the right end. D Don’? Forget went as well as anything during the morning when he ran six alone in 1.17, the last half in 51j, for he never appeared to-be doing his best. A Good Trial. Foxhaven pleased by having it well on .Arabian Night at the end of six in I.IBA. As Arabian Night has been working well and raced w’dl on Saturday, this was a good trial. Good Efforts. Iceland Spar showed no signs of soreness at the end of a smart half in 49J. lie will be ridden in the Winter Cup by A. E. JJllis. Palfrey and Eulogist, 1.1 1, and Lowry Bay and Greek Dancer, 1.17*, were responsible for good efforts over six, Mauretania doing it better than Forte in 1.20. Bashful Lady. .» Bashful Imdy, who will be nearly the best backed on the day in the Cup, ran seven with St. Cloud in 1.311, the last hau in 52. Stabilize, a good track worker, was better than Itara Avis at the end of live in 1.1 1-5. Rakanui Well. ' . Kakanui-worked on the plough. Brouguton rode him and has got the ride in the Cup. -Rakanui worked ••lid pulled up wen. Miss Ciorane again went wet] for Broughton in ‘running four in 49A, and he has the ride again on Saturday. Miss Cloraae i s a half-sister by Myosotis to All Nigut. All Night himself worked well over six in 1.22, and he is quite sound. As there now every chance of him being able to start in the Cup, the connexions of Compeer have secured M. Caddy for tneir horse in the big mile. Smaller Field. As Treasurer has broken down and 1 outatau will also start in the Cup, the Held in the I’aparna Handicap will be reduced. No plans have been made yet for Symbol, who also claims the double engagement. Alienate’s Task. Alienate, who is in the Trial Hurdles and the Sydenham Hurdles, will start in the open race, and will be ridden by J. Williamson, who schooled him this morning. Change of Rider. J. Hayes, who rode Ruling .Star when he won the Homeby Steeplechase at the liunt meeting, has got. off him in tne National on to Aussie Ra, and M. Caddy has taken the ride on Ruling Star. Northerners. Limbohm was on the tracks tins morning, but did not jump. Other North Islanders to put in an appearance are Triple Crown, Enthrall, Tawhainui. First Found and Foreign Coin. Likely Outsider. Surprises are sometimes brought off in the Winter Cup, and a likely outsider this year is The Joker, a six-year-old gelding by Paladin from Attractive Lady, who ran a good race in the Brabazon Handicap, finishing up just behind the placed horses. The Joker is a half-brother to Lord Nuffield. Scratching. The only scratching at-munced is Ballybrit in the Enlield Steeplechase. Slayer Recovered. Slayer has completely recovered from his recent slight soreness, which was due to a cut received during the running of the Homeby Steeplechase. Weather Changes. The weather changed at midday and light rain has fallen since, but it is not heavy enough to cause trouble, though it will keep the tracks soft.
