SHORTAGE OF FOOD STUFFS
Position Said To Be Bad Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, August 5. “The position is very bad regarding food stocks in this country, and we must be prepared to grow more in this district,” said the president of the Wanganui District Primary Production Council, Mr. W. S. Glenn, at a meeting today. Mr. Glenn said that he attended a conference of primary production councils in Palmerston North.'which was attended by representatives of 27 out of 28 councils in the North Island, showing the interest taken. The conference was attended by the Minister of Primary Production £or War Purposes, Mr. Poison, The trend of the Minister’s remarks showed that there was a shortage of foodstuffs. No one had any idea till the conference how short this country was of pork, bacon, wheat, barley, and vegetables of all kinds. It was necessary to appeal to all users of potatoes to cut the ends off table potatoes and save them for seed. Pig stocks were also bad. There was a shortage of breeding sows because of so many having been killed last year. Mr. Polson informed ‘the conference that barley for pig feed would be made available. The change-over from cheese to butter wonld help to improve matters in the fattening of pigs. Mr. Glenn said that the council would assist the appeal boards in every way to make farm labour available, but would not recommend men to be released from the army where they were not required. The council would carefully investigate every case.
