OBITUARY
Captain T. V. Hill
The Union Company has.received advice that Captain T. V. Hill died in Vancouver on Tuesday. Till his retirement due to ill-health in May, 1941, Captain Hill was one of the company’s bestknown and most popular masters. For the past year he had been living in retirement in Vancouver. Captain Hill was born in Auckland on May 14, 1881, and as u youth went to sea in intercolonial sailing ships, serving in the barquentines Countess of Kanfurly and Senorita, and in the barque Manurewa, as well as in the Government steamer trading to the Cook Islands. Shortly after receiving his second mate s certificate he entered the service of the Union Company, and on December 24, 1905, was appointed fourth officer of the Manuka. He was promoted third officer of the Moura in April, 1900, and to second officer of the Takapuna in Augist, 1907, and in May, 1910, was appointed chief officer of the Moura. Captain Hill was appointed to command the first Komata on September 27, 1915, and in October, 1923, he was appointed to the transpacific cargo service. In August, 1926, Captain Hill was transferred to the company’s passenger vessels, his first command being the Tahiti in the San Francisco service. In September, 1927, he was appointed to the Niagara in the Vancouver service, and remained in command of that vessel till the end of 1935. On the retirement of Captain Spring-Brown on January 1, 1936, Captain Hill was appointed to the command of the Aorangi, and remained m that vessel till his retirement.
