Winner Disqualified At Auckland
Misfortune struck heavily at the Auckland provincial war-tiiue cross-country championship on Saturday afternoon, when the Ellerslie distance star, 1). M. Harris, scored a brilliant victory, only to be denied official recognition, being disqualified by Mr. A. Moon, the referee, who considered he committed a breach of athletic rules, states the "Auckland Star.’’ Harris has decided to appeal against this decision. With two miles behind them and Dickie were leading, five yards ahead of G. Long, with 20 yards to Brown, Neal, Appleton and Orange. Around the lake Harris moved up very fast to ake the lead, aud was first out from the lake from Young, Appleton and Orange. At this stage Harris committed the alleged breach of running he was later disqualified, xhe aut "“ tiou was that he changed his tootwear from running shoes to sandshoes, which the referee ruled, in the circumstances, to be equivalent to receiving outside h °Over the final stages Harris ran away from Young and breasted the tape in a connriratively fresh condition. Young plodded on to take second place, a short dis auce ahead of the strongly finishing Orange\’ith Lydiard, Dickie and Appleton following m that order.
