WOMEN TO REGISTER
Those In 22-23 Age Group ESSENTIAL WAR SERVICE
All women aged -- and 23 other than those in the exempted classes are required to register on or before Monday, August 30, with a view to their direction into essential work. The Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr. McLagan, stated yesterday that I hough a large number of girls previously registered had not so far been directed into more essential work, some difficulties had arisen in finding sufficient girls with particular types of skill or living in particular localities where they were wanted. These difficulties would be largely overcome by increasing the size of the pool from which girls could be selected. ‘•A further factor of major importance,” said the Minister, “is the recent decision to recruit women on a considerable scale for service in the Army. The withdrawal of girls to’ the forces will diminish the normal flow of girls into industry to replace men, so that the power of direction and diversion from’ non-essential employment will have to be used to a greater extent than has so far been the case.” Women who have attained the age of 22 since tlie previous Order was made and who are therefore already registered, should not register again in terms of the new Order. The method of registration is by completing a form N. 5.143, which is available at all Post Offices throughout the Dominion, and forwarding this form to the district manpower officer nearest to the place of residence.
The full list of exempted classes is as follows Persons registered for the purposes of Regulation 00 of the National Service Emergency Regulation, 1040; persons rendering continuous service as members of His Majesty’s naval, military, or air forces; persons employed as civilians by the Royal New Zealand Navy, the Army Department, or the Royal New Zealand Air Force; full-time employees of registered hospitals; persons who are outside New Zealand; persons in receipt of invalids’ benefits under tlie Social Security Act, 1938; inmates of any hospital or of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind; persons in respect of whom reception-orders are in force under the Mental Defectives Act, 1911 (whether or not they are detained in institutions under that Act), or who are detained as voluntary boarders under that Act; persons undergoing sentences of imprisonment or detained in Borstal institutions.
