Hawke’s Bay Hunt Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, August L The new racing season was opened in the North Island today with the race meeting of the Hawke s Bay Hunt Club, In association with the Dannevirke Hunt Club. The weather was fine, though cold, and the track-in splendid order lor this time of the year. A feature of the programme was the appearance of several horses who. are engaged at the Grand National meeting, and among those to show good form _ivere .Malacca, Indian Sun, Poutatau and RakaThere was a good attendance and the totalizator handled £17,530, compared with £10,121, an increase of L7WJ. Following an inquiry into interference suffered by Cherry Hunter turning into the straight in the Otane Hurdles, It. Ireland* rider of Malacca, the winner was suspended for one month for careies riding The stewards considered that trie incident did not affect the result Another inquiry was held into suffered by Dorado less than 100 lord 3 from the winning post In the steeplechase. No action was deemed necessary. Malacca scored solidly in the Otanc Hurdles. Black Saint and Cherry Hunter were prominent for a iriiie, w-liere Malacca took over from Cherry Hunter, and ore the concluding quarter of a mile the issue was not dn doubt, though Cherry Hunter would have offered stiffer opposition but for being pushed over on the fence by Malacca turning into the straight. Bli ick Saint, coming on again in the ™ r " long, took second place from Cherry Hunter. Half Caste was fourth, ahead ot Colossal Chief. . . , Gale Duchesse took charge at the end or a furlong in tlie Okawa Maiden No. 1, ana led all the way to win easily ivoni bun Valley, who began slowly, but dn l ''veil to make up ground. Rackman, alwa.vs prominent, finished well for third, and Sang.r came from well back to get fourth. Gay Falcon, the favourite, was never a possibility. tValpero, an Australian-bred gelding, showed early speed, but ran on the course at the first turn . Indian Sun always looked the winner or the .Russell Memorial Steeplechase over the concluding round,, in which he set the mice. Beau Monde was with him unt the last half-mile, where Dorado and Cherry Plum joined in. Cherry Plum could not sustain the fight, and it was left to Indian Sun and Dorado to fight it out. Nearing the post Indian Sun drew out to win easily from Dorado, with Cherry Plum five lengths awa.v third, comfortably beat nfe the Others, of whom Henry of did best'. A bad jufiip two fences from home cost him a place chance. Cheddlngton was much too good for the hack stayers in the Rlverslea Handicap. It was his first start over a middle distance, and he did not have to produce his ibest to win. He led throughout and drew away In the straight to score comfortably ibv four lengths easing up from Hamish, who comfortably beat Support. The Okawa Maiden No. 2 produced a close finish between the fava whainul, and Charivari, a half-sister to Charade. Enlarge and lawhainul led to the straight, where Enlarge bored yfehj off the track and Charivari drew level with Tawhalnui. They ran locked together to the post, Tawhalnui getting the verdict bv a sliort head. They were six lengths clear of Enlarge, who finished wide out on the track and looked unlucky. The Hunters’ Flat was won easily byArabic, who is now raced by H- »■ Greene. Arabic got « ar ly nd staved there. Black Saint, Inventor and Tashi Lama all tried to get on terms with him as they turned into the straight, but Arabic held on to win by a good margin. •Tashi Luma took second mowy from Black Saint by a neck VE, fl?..- fJir fourth. He was checked in the first tur long, but did not lose much ground, and thereafter had every chance. Once a S a }“ Baron Bold refused to take any part In the win favourite, scored an attractive .win in the Tlkokino Handicap. He was second in the running to the straight made by Black Majesty, took charge at inside the distance, and then •held off late runs by Rakanul and Augment to win narrowly, but handily. Rakami! sixth into the straight, iinlshed with great dash, cutting Augment down a stride short of the post. Augment was always in the first four and ran h s best race‘for some time. Hasten, well back early, finished over the others for fourth, and'Saxon Tor and Black Majesty were next. Burra Sahib was well placed with the leading bunch to the straight, but his weight stopped him Duality knuckled over at the start and was unable to lilt ° U S!vana ended a long run of disappointments by winning the Waitangi Handicap at long odds. Darag was four lengths clear turning into the straight from Sun Valiev, Theatre, Piko Plko, Enthrall and Slvaria. Inside the last furlong Theatre :and Sun -Valley almost got on terms-wlth Darag.. while Siyana put in a claim out on tlie track, and near the post blyana -finished too solidly for the others and won going away from Darag, who narrowly beat Theatre.
