HOMEBY STEEPLES SURPRISE
Christchurch Hunt ERNDALE’S FINE WIN IN HURDLES By Telegraph.—From The Watcher. CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. The racing at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting at Rlccarton on Saturday provided plenty of interest, the displays of horses prominently engaged at the Grand National fixture attracting attentj Tl’ie principal jumping event, the Homebv Steeplechase. saw the Christchurchowned but North Island-trained Ruling Star bring off a surprise, and an outstanding effort by the Aucklander Erndale was the feature of the hurdles contest. On the flat the Winter Cup candidates had a trial in the Brabazon Handicap, which was won by the Southlander Bashful Lady, all the places going to southerners. Backers fared very poorly throughout the day, Compeer being the only favourite to win, and some of the prices returned were substantial. The weather was fine and sunny after a hard frost, and the going was a trifle so’ft on top. though it improved during the day. There was a good attendance and the totalizator handled £27,792/10/-, compared with £22,100 last year, an increase of £5092/10/-. Strong Finish. The hunters in the Hunt Cup Hid not give a faultlees display and the winner, Valens, was nearly down at the stand double, but he came too strongly at the finish for the topweight, Wexford Bridge, who lost a good winning chance by faulty jumps. They were too good for the otjier horses. The favourite, Red Owl, was prominent for a long way, but.tired badly over the last five furlongs. The fourth horse, Golden Glow, also jumped badly. Favourite Disappoints. The Hack and Huntere’ Steeplechase saw Golden Memory disappoint his army of supporters. He had every chance and when Night Hawk fell at the stand double and brought down Surcoat, it left Gald ® u Memory with a commanding lead. However, he chanced a lot of bis fences and was tiring badly over the last three or four furlongs, where the- outsider, Benevolent,, who had been hanging on to the leaders, began to make his presence felt. He was with Golden Memory at the last fence and once over had no difficulty in running home a comfortable winner. Golden Memory continued to tire and lost second money to the fast-finishing \alantua. who was kept a long way back early and looked as if he should have been much, harder to beat. Night Scout A 1 best bf -the others. The National candidate, Anglo-French, fell. Stable’a Second Win. The maiden race was won comfortably by the Foxbridge three-year-old loxhaven, giving C. Emerson’s stable its second win in succession. The North Islander Home Rule, who was the favourite, and Junior led to the distance, but both tired and Foxhaven came solidly in the finish to beat two I outsiders m Full Pitch aud Aquitaine, the latter s performance from, a draw of 26 being exceptional. The best of the others were Kernel. Desert Love, Gunga Din, Home Rule and Eulogia. Good Jumping. The Homebv Steeplechase was an ’ Interesting race and provided a good spectacle, with jumping of a high standard. It was chiefly notable for the remarkable improvement in form of Ruling Star, who, contrary to his usual habit of tailing oft., was always hanging oh to the leaders and, running to the front from the top brush tile last time, lie safely cleared the last obstacle and never appeared likely to be caught. Erination, there all the way, was unable to make much impression on the winner, and Slayer stayed on solidly into third place. Slayer, led early and was then allowed to drop out of it, but be was coming strongly again at the right end.. Master Lackham made most of the running, and he jumped, well, but he was tiring at the end to be beaten into fourth place. Recollection ran well and was in the firing line to the last fence, where he fell Dozie Boy disappointed his supporters. lie tailed off in most of the running, and it was only toward the end that he was going well. He finished fifth fairly well back, but he was travelling as well as any of the others at the riglit end, Baly Brit 'and Gay Boa ran poorly and Turaki fell. Outsider Scores. The hack spflnt saw Didham’s stable bring off a coup with Coy, a half-sister to the former Trentham-trained Shy. Though she was a rank outsider, the stable was confident, and in the finish Coy won well, finishing solidly out in the middle of the track to run down the leaders and win going' away from another rank outsider, Miss Clorane, who was ridden by Broughton. The only one of the early leaders, to come on at all well was Jolly Time, who finished third, and the best ot the others were Stormy Petrel, Varuna, Hinepo and Milton Abbas. Pioneer showed a lot of early pace, but did not run on. and the favourite Warrigal was never in the picture. Outstanding Effort.
The Longlieach Hurdles "' aS uotttblo for an outstanding performance by the topweiglit, Pirndale. Never farther bacx than fourth, lie was heavily restrained practically all the way to keep in belnnil the leaders and, though inclined to jump big and riit/ner eareluily once or twieii, H was only a matter of Caddy lotting bis head go from the last fence for Erudaie to swamp the opposition, and be was being pulled up as they neared the post. Merry Simon, always one of the leaders, hung on well for his second, but he hud no chance with the winner, and Rockery was a poor third. The best of tlie others were Heidelberg, Noko, Donadea, Dividend and Bow Street. Noko was the favourite, and he ran well for a long way, but the winner showed the South Island hurdle form to be the poorest for many years. Native Song fell at the second fence. •Winter Cup Trial.
The Brabazon Handicap as a Winter Cup trial enhanced the prospects of the South Island division, though the race itself at Hie finish was confined to Bashful Laijy and All Night.. The performance of Bashful I.adv was very good, as she drew -0, yet. had tho pace to run up bandy Very early and in Hie end she ran on solidly to hold off All Night, who, always prominent, is improving with racing. St. Cloud ran Her usual solid race for third, and Hie best of tlie others were Sally Lunn, Symbol, Don’t Forget, Tho Champ, The Joker, Fleet Street, Greek Dancer and Sham Boy. Sally Lunn, who started favourite, was back seventh or eighth in the running, and she iinlshed well. The Champ was one of the prominent division in most of tlie running, but he did not come on quite so well as expected by the betting, though he ran a good race. 'Tlie Joker attracted attention liy his showing, lint tln> North Islanders, Red Dash and Rara Avis, were never dangerous. Kara Avis settled flown about tenth in the running, but never improved, Don't Forget run well. A Good Horse. The concluding hack mile gave Coinpeer another chance to prove himself one of the best hacks in commission. Backed down to even money, he fully Justified the support by a decisive win, though the margin was not great. Compeer looks a good horse, and after being handy in the
running lie had no dlllieulty In /’■■“.binthe front at the desired moment in the straight, and though Lowry Bay ran up close at the finish, Ellis was riding very confidently on the winner. T‘i’ wr J„ nI ,: back seventh or eighth in the running, came on solidly in the straight, and was unlucky to strike an opponent so good as Compeer. Arabian Night, who been slow away, finished over the others and put up a creditable performance, and t fourth horse, .Mauretania, would have been more dangerous had she got a better p:assage. Norse, who got very poorly awaj, was finishing on not far away. Josette, the second favourite, led to the distance aud then weakened. Details Of The Racing CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CUP. of £si>o.
