ARBOR DAY 1942

Wellington Observance The official Arbor Day celebration and planting will take place in Wellington in Central Park, near the main entrance, on Wednesday, August 5. The importance of observing this day is strongly commended to all public bodies by the Minister of Internal Affairs, and the Wellington City Council, in cooperation with 'the Wellington Beautifying Society, the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, and the Wellington Horticultural Society, invites all citizens, scholars and teachers of secondary and primary schools to be present at the ceremony. While this is the official ceremony, it is expected that suburban bodies and groups will combine and carry through their own district plantings; The importance of tree-planting to the community in its relation to prevention of soil erosion is universally recognized. The official ceremony will be attended by the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and others who will follow him and .Lady Newall in planting trees will include the mayor, Mr. Hislop, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, the United States Minister, BrigadierGeneral Hurley, the United Kingdom High Commissioner, Sir Harry Batterbee, and the High Commissioner for Canada, Dr. W. A. Riddell.
