RATIONING PLAN Tyres For Bicycles

Tyres and tubes for pedal bicycles are to be brought under control to ensure that only necessitous and essential purposes shall govern the ability to purchase. Making this announcement last night, the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr.Sullivan, said that after a full discussion with representatives of the trade, a cycle tyre and tube rationing scheme had been framed and this was calculated to make for the most equitable distribution of the very limited supplies that were available or were likely to be available. "The entire scheme,” Mr. Sullivan said, "will be under the jurisdiction of a central committee that, will function in Wellington. Tlie personnel of this committed is fully representative of. all interests, and its members are thoroughly conversant with tlie position as it exists, and With tlie degree of necessity that exists so far as the cyclist is concerned. District committees will function in the four main centres and, in addition, to ensure complete coverage for tlie Dominion, 36 local committees will operate in various centres.

“District committees will meet weekly, “but they will receive their allocation of tyres and tubes on a four-weekly basis. AVlien approval for tlie purchase of a new tyre or tube has been given, tlie form will be sent to the manufacturers and they, in turn, will supply the dealer. Applicants, therefore, should keep in close touch with their dealers. It is necessary on receipt of a new tyre to surrender the old one to the dealer, who will forward it for reclaiming or retreading purpose. The above provisions will operate as from August. 1. “The priority list is' devised to cover workers in essential industry. Persons who live within one and a half miles of their work or place of education, or who have other means of transport, have littlo possibility of procuring tyres. In view of 'the fact, that paper is also in short supply I ask such persons to refrain from making application. Should the position improve there will doubtless be some easing of the allocation. Meanwhile tlie acute shortage necessitates stringent control.”
