JAIL FOR ASSAULT

Acquitted by a jury of the mapslaughter of Maud Purcell, but convicted of common assault, on her, anil also on I.iori I’aape Tape, David Waitoa appeared for sentence before the Chief .Justice (Sir Michael Myers) in Hie Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday. After counsel for the prisoner, Mr. K. R. Seott. had spoken of Waitoa’s character, and said he must have had a record of good conduct in the Army to be promoted to lance-corporal, his Honour told Waitoa that the jury had taken a merciful view of his case, but when it came to sentencing him his Honour could not lose sight, of the fact that on three previous occasions Waitoa had been convicted of assault on Mrs. Purcell. Dor the assault on Airs. Purcell a term of one year's imprisonment with hard labour, was imposed, and for that on Tape a term of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, the terms to be concurrent.
