WOMEN CONDUCTORS
Same Pay As The Men Men employed on the Wellington city tramcars are still being called up for military service. As the number of males in the service lessens the demand for women necessarily increases. There are now 23 women conductors on the tracks, and II are undergoing training. But even if this last group were immediately available, it would not supply the need. The Tramways Department could do with another GO young women of the right type. Now that they are receiving the same pay as male conductors, no great difficulty in securing such -assistance is expected, even though the competition for female labour is keen and getting keener. The women conductors now earn ib 10/- in a six-day week, and, should they work on Sundays, when double rates obtain, they could draw over £8 a week.
