'QUAKE DAMAGE
Hotel Regent Wall Cracked Among the brick buildings which have been found to have suffered severely through the earthquake ou June 24 is the Hotel Regent in Manners Street (formerly known as the New Zealander Hotel). This is a three-story structure, which stands on the corner of Manners aud Lombard Streets, not far from the Regent Theatre. The Lombard Street facade does not dis-’ close any faults, but there are cracks extending through the parapet and cornices on the second floor, extending in some instances to the ground level, which indicate that the building received a considerable jar, which had its effect ou the Manners Street frontage. It is expected that the damage will necessitate the reconstruction of at least a section of the building. At present the trouble in getting work done on buildings considered to be more or less unsafe is the scarcity of labour. To facilitate matters representations are being made to the Commissioner of Defence Construction (Mr. J. Fletcher) to release tradesmen and labourers in sufficient numbers from other works to push ou with these repairs.
