' GOOD NATIONAL FIELDS Winners At Washdyke (By The Watcher.) Excellent acceptances and nominations were received by the C.J.C. on Friday for the National meeting. All the top-weights stayed in the three leading events and it is worth noting that they are all Norf*? Islanders. The field for Hie National at present 1b 21, and with only another payment to be made, it looks like drawing plenty of runners. There are 36 still in the Cup, far too many lor all to have an even chance, and there seems nttle bat.l,l- - that the number will be materially reduced by the final payments. Ibere are 22 still in the National Hurdles, Altogether the meeting promises to be a great success, and there will not be many North Islanders missing from their engagements, despite the present diflleulties ot transport. Native Song. Some surprise was expressed by Native Song falling out of the Grand National Hurdles field, but he is in the Trial Hurdle Race aiid Sydenham ■ Hurdles on the first day of the meeting, and in the Spreydon Hurdles on the last day, and is at Riccarton. He is also in the Longhead) Hurdles at:the Hunt meeting next Saturday. Form at Washilyke. . At the South Canterbury Hunt meeting last year Treasurer was the winner of the I’entiow Hack, while Boloyna and St. Cloud ran second and third iu the Claremont Handicap. Treasurer and st Cloud were both winners at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and later the Winter Lup resulted: Treasurer 1, Boloyua 2, st. Cloud 3 so that the form worked out well from those two hunt meetings, On Saturday Symbol repeated St. Cioud’s performance in the Claremont Handicap and is engaged at the Hum meeting in the Brabazon Handicap and in the Cup, as also is Street. Compeer also has. the opportunity to follow in the footsteps: of Treasurer in the same events. Still In. Treasurer survived the first payment tor the Winter Cup, so his trainer must have hopes of getting him to the poet. Not in National. Recollection, the winner of the South Canterbury Steeplechase, is not in the National, but he is in the Homeby Steeples at the Hunt meeting. This was his first success as a steeplechaser, though he has had experience. As a hurdler he was good, but unsounduess has troubled him, in the past. He has only to keep going to win more over country, tor he has been schooling very well at Riccarton. The Second aud third horses, Gay Boa and Anglo French, are both in the National. Gay Boa won this race at Wash dvke last year, but did not run at the Hunt meeting nor in the National, and in his only start there finished second to Hyderabad in the Beautort steeples. May Emulate Treasurer. Compeer, who will endeavour to emulate the three successive wins of Treasurer at this time last year, has been only twice out of a place inthis ten starts this season, and has won at his last two B ta r ts. He is a coming four-year-old gelding by Paper Money from Last Note, and is owned by 1 Mr. D. J. McDonald and trained at IVingatui. He has a colonial pedigree from his dam, who is by the Kilbroney Horse Songbird from Hard Cash, by Benales from San Severe, by Sant llano. IU is a branch of Mermaids No. 14 famllj. Penates, who appears in the Pedigree, won the Winter Cup in 1908, followed by the Stewards’ Handicap in November, and two years later he won the Great Easter Han dicap. Hardly National Form, Turalcl, winner of the Tescheinaker Steeplechase ut Washdyke is a National lightweight, but the form on Saturday was not up to National standard, aud he took nearly eight seconds longer for the journey than Recollection in the South Lanterbury Steeplechase. Turaki is an aged gelding by Balboa from Divinal, and had only one previous race this season, and he had one unsuccessful start last season. It is over two years since his previous win. Cup Candidate. , Svmbol, who has brought herself into discussions for the Winter Cup by her win on .Saturday, had won only once previously this season, a sprint at -Riverton at Easter. Symbol, a rising live-year-old mare by Gascony from Symbolic. is owned by Miss J. Edgar Jones, and is trained at Washdyke by E. J. Ellis. She was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry and Is a sister to Symcony and half-sister to The Crooner, both good gallopers. .She is also closely related to Catalogue and Cylinder. Symbol, who' cost her owner 120gns. at the National sales, has not been over-raced. She started twice as a two-yeanold without success, but last season won ner first three races on end, being then raced by her lessor, C. C, McCarthy, of Riccarton, who had a high opinion of her at that time.
