ARMY INVENTIONS
(British Official Wireless.) (Received July 27, 9 p.m.) RUGBY, July 26.. Additions to army equipment include the Bailey bridge, which is said to be superior to anything the Germans possess and carriers for swimming infantry. Their uses were shown in a comprehensive demonstration in northern England. The bridge is assembled on land and pushed over a stream or chasm. A new track which simplifies tlie strengthening of the approaches to bridges has also been adopted. The swimming infantry curriers are given the necessary buoyancy by kapok floats and propel themselves by their fracks which act like paddles. In l.he water, the carrier has little more than 18 in. freeboard with the tops ot tlie mi hats of the crew just showing, and presents a verv small target. At 50 yards they resemble drifting wood. Engineers also have a landmine detector about the size of a soup plate, to be carried by a mail crawling through n minefield.
