Scarves For Soldiers
Sir,—As a member of the armco forces who has benefited immensely by the issue of scarves, balaclavas, etc., by the Patriotic Council, I would like to comment on the statement made’ by Mr’. Bain, Wanganui, a’ member of the "Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council,- printed in your columns on July 23. Mr. Bain declares that “hs‘ is inclined to think that the supplying of woollen scarves to soldiers was a' waste of patriotic money. Boes Mr J Bain realize that -in at least one North’ Island camp it is not an unusual oc-; currence for a man who damps his hair while washing in the morning to comb flakes of ice out of it five minutes later? Under such conditions the wearing of a scarf is essential; being both more comfortable as well as more hy-> gienic than the only alternative, an-, other shirt.
Many lads besides myself have had, to resort to the wearing of a balaclava] before they could hope to sleep at] night owing to the frosty draught! which blows round one’s head all ! night. As it is utterly impossible for mothers, wives, sisters, etc., to obtain wool -to knit these essential garments I trust that the National Patriotic Council will continue to give to the boys of New Zealand those very wel-l come comforts for which they are deeply grateful.—l am, etc., GRATE- 1 FUL. July 25.
