BOARDING HOUSE CHARGES
No Increases Granted PRICE TRIBUNAL TAKES ACTION No increases in boarding-house charges in Wellington had been authorized by the Price Tribunal, stated an officer of the tribunal yesterday, and action had been taken in one case where a reduced service was being given for the same price. When it was pointed out that there was a tendency for proprietors to increase prices or reduce the number of meals without altering the tariff in compensation, the officer replied that the public was expected' to co-operate by reporting such cases to the tribunal. One case recently investigated as the result of such a complaint was at a well-known boarding-house where the proprietor announced that as a result of staff difficulties lunch would not be served except at the weekend. The tariff was to remain the same/ Price Tribunal inspectors pointed out that as the proposed change would put the boarders to additional expense it was equivalent to an increase in the price, and if the reason was shortage of staff there would be a saving in wages as well as food. As a result of this action lunch is still being served. No applications had been received for permission to increase the rates at boarding-houses, but this would be granted only on the basis of increased costs, it was stated. Action had recently been taken regarding restaurant charges, and it is understood that inspectors of the tribunal have interested themselves in the operation of boarding-houses and hotels.
