DE LUXE THEATRE
With extremely pleasant scenic backgrounds and no lack of action, "The Showdown,” the main attraction at the De Luxe Theatre this week, brings back “Hopalong” Cassidy (William Boyd). Once more he “horns in” on a gang of wrongdoers and sees that justice is done in a manner all his own. Colonel White, breeder of line bloodstock, finding himself in financial difficulties, is forged to sell out. A so-called Baron Render visits the ranch and offers to buy, but “Hopalong,” who has been summoned by the colonel for advice, soon discovers that the baron is a fake and that he is the leader of a gang of horse thieves. Meanwhile, Sue, the colonel’s niece, and actually the legal owner of the ranch, arrives on the scene. When the colonel discovers what has been happening, the shock kills him. Rendon and his confederates then manage to steal some of the valuable horses. “Hopalong’ aud “Lueky” (Russell Hayden) manage to outwit them eventually, however, aud they meet the justice they deserve. With the trouble over, “Lucky” furthers his romance with Sue, his new employer, and the film ends on a note of contentment. The associate attraction, ‘‘The Night of Nights," is quite different from “The Showdown.” It shows Bat O’Brien as a leading actor-manager who drinks too much for his owu and his company’s good. When he and his friend (Roland Young) disgrace themselves on the first night of a new show, his wife leaves him, and he loses touch with her and his daughter for many years. "When he receive* a letter from his daughter saying she. is going to pay him a visit, he puts on a good appearance to impress her. She finds out what sort of a life he has been living, but shows hpr faith in him by persuading him to put on the play he should have done for her mother. With his daughter in his wife’s part, O’Brien makes a success out of failure. Olympe Bradna plays the part of the daughter and is thoroughly delightful. Many arc the touching moments, and many the moments of humour.
