King’s Birthday
Sir. —It was difficult for today’s reply to me to portray a wide view: and there was no comment upon my impractical—at present—all Saturday work suggestion. Individuals weren't picked upon; but I know about the golf and bowls. My considerate hardworking boss sometimes gets off to golf with another large company manager. Both, too. are active on various bodies. When lucky I get to bowls by five.. Invariably some “business men” games are well under way. They are all better for it, too. Who envies a boss job? It appears “gallery play" to me. to suggest that war work would be helped, or mythical equal sacrifice sighted: by making Saturday-working shop and office assistants work on a statutory holiday. Everybody should be roped in for war work—if possible. —I am. etc.—OLD BLOKE. Wellington, November 15.
