EMPIRE TRADE

Britain To Impose Restrictions

NEWS CONFIRMED

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright.) LONDON, November 14. The President of the Board of Trade. Captain Oliver Lyttelton, has confirmed that restrictions will be imposed on intra-Empire trade. He said that war production could be increased only at the expense of civilian consumption, which applies to the Empire as a whole, in addition to the United Kingdom.

Further restrictions on supplies for home consumers may be announced shortly, therefore the Government vvrlnot lie" sympathetic to requests by British exporters for increases in their trade with the Empire. . . It will be suggested to the Dominions that they could greatly contribute to the joint war effort if they decide to impose restrictions on civilian consumption similar to those imposed in the United Kingdom. Lord Stamp, a member of the Economic Advisory Council, in a speech appealed to tiie Dominions to help the Umpire to tighten its belt. ••We must rid ourselves of the nation that it is necessarily a fine thing carry on as usual in our way ot lite, he said. “Tightening of the belt applies to the consumption of new food, recreations, and new clothing. Our requirements from the United States are so huge and the need for dollars so great that the necessity to avoid using dollars wherever possible is immense. “The Empire is one in this respect. It is not much good saving the efforts of workers in the United Kingdom by diverting them from the production ot things which we can forgo if we employ the same workers in making unnecessary things for the rest of the Empire. “I have had newspapers recently from the Dominions which in the nature of their advertisements and, still more in the sheer bulk of newsprint, arc costing valuable dollars which the journal itself is using. These newspapers indicate that a great deal remains to be done within the sterling area to achieve equality of effort in this respect.”
