BUILDING PROGRAMME

NOT YET ABLE TO CALL FOR TENDERS
Dominion Special Service
NAPIER, November 13.
Disappointment that it was not possible to call tenders for the building programme which the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board has in view was expressed at the monthly meeting by the chairman, Mr. C. Lassen. He said the whole of the finance was arranged and the board could call on the first amount of £lO,OOO on December 2. It was decided that a deputation go to Wellington to see the director.
“We have both our hospitals overcrowded and the board is being put to extra expense, as we have had to provide temporary accommodation,’’ said Mr. Lassen.
Approval was given for the erection of a bulk store at Hastings Hospital and for the purchase of live stock and equipment for the Park Island farm at a co=-t of £274.
It was reported that the 5 per cent, increase in salaries to members of the staff not covered by awards would mean an extra £7OO a year to the board, there being 71 persons involved. Sister E. M. Smith was appointed sis-ter-in-charge at the McHardy Maternity Home. Sister D. M. Cox was appointed senior sister and Staff Nurse E. E. Smith has been promoted to junior sister. The board discussed whether a hospital board member or official was acting in the best interests of the community by enlisting in the Home Guard, and it was decided to refer the question to the Department of Health for guidance. It was decided to establish a panier of first-aid equipment for use in the event of a railway disaster in the district.
