BELLE CANE WINS OAKS STAKES
Jockey Club Handicap To Nigger Boy C.J.C. MEETING By Telegraph.—From The Matchei:. CHRISTCHURCH, November 13. Two of the principal events on the third day of the C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting at Riccarton today again went to Nortl l Islanders, Belle Cane winning the Oaks Stakes for three-year-old fillies from another northerner in Cherry Bay, and Nigger Bov winning the Jockey Gluo Handicap. ’ Royal Chief defeated his single opponent, The Buzzer, in the Canterbury Cup and Rakahanga took the last. , , t , The weather was unpleasant earlj, a strong norwester prevailing, but later it died away. The track was hard and fast, and, with the assistance of a strong wind home, good times were recorded m the truly-run events. The attendance was fair, and, witn the restricted betting in one or two small fields, there was a small increase m the figures for the day. ±he total was £42,822/10/-, an increase of£3o. xne increase for the meeting is £14,933/10/ • Won All The Way. The hurdle race was won. easily all the way bv Jewish Lad. He was always going too well for his opponents. Dorado finished better than Recollection lor second, after both had followed the leader throughout. The fourth horse, bit Frederick, was also in the running till the last fence, which he hit and then dropped back. Master Dingle hit the six-furlon fence hard and lost his rider, while Milford hit the second and third obstacles and fell right back. Runaway Victory. Varuna scored a runaway two-year-old race. Beginning brilliant j he Jas always on the bit to win by a big margin from two little-fancied run ners in Renarde and Divorced, etho had followed him throughout. Silver Lily was always prominent for her and the best of the others were Far Avion an par ll Avion was again mettlesome betore the race, and, though he came on to the straight just in behind the leaders, he was never doing it well. Baid More For A Place. Belle Cane, at a very short price and paying slightly more tor a place .than a win, had no difficulty in winning the Oaks Stakes. Dona, by gom 0 to the front and cantering for the first five or six furlongs, tried to make it a home, but Belle Cane, pullinghard was always with her till Rue ran up to ’ when Belle Cane pulled m behind and the pace improved. Belle Cane came on the outer into the straight and, jomm» Doria at the false rail, drew clear and won easing up. L>r wound Cherry Bay outstayed Dona for secona money, and the.others were well back. Nigger Boy’s Success. Nigger Boy had a decisive win in the Jcckev Club Handicap. Out first, he dropped in behind of a furlong, and, running to the trout again at the false rail, he was never likely W Second 11 ’innings came on better than Norseman at the end for second and Windsor Chief was fourth from Globe Trotter. Globe Trotter was in the rear it the running, and,, though he made a premising effort leaving the fake rail, it was short-lived. Two-Horse Race. With only The Buzzer opposing Royal Chief in the Canterbury Cup, betting was greatly restricted. The pace for the first tile was slow, and roars of greeted their first two furlongs out of the straight, with Royal Chief trying to break into a canter and The Buzzer with his head in his chest. The pace was on over the last five furlongs, and Royal Chief had little difficulty in securing the prize. At the same time The Buzzer put in a solid run home, and appeared a better herse than in the Cup. Outsider Scores. A hot favourite in Blandisher. went under to a -big outsider in Craiglea in the Ashley Handicap. Though drawn 19, Blandisher had every chance, being up with the leaders, Withdrawal and Svnthetic all the way, but in the straight Craiglea, who had been handy, came at the favourite, and had it on him a long way off the post. Blandisher was able to hold on to beat Synthetic for second, with Blue Coat fourth, and the best of the others Lord Midas, Withdrawal, Leigbnor, and Star Wink. Double Figures. Sir Amyas, at double figures, won decisively in the Otaio Plate. Boloyna made the running, but was weakening entering the straight, where it looked .like Schoolgirl Augment, and Great Night. But over the last half furlong Sir Amyas came on the outer and won going away. Schoolgirl finished a little better than Augment. Gay Fox. well up all the way, was fourth, and then came Gayest Son, Muffler, Great Night, and Boloyna. Gayest Son was favourite. He was well back in the early running, but had moved up handy by the time they reached the
straight. From there, however, he was unable to come on. Led All the Way.
With the assistance of a 51b. allowance, Rakahanga led all the way to win the Avon Handicap, and held on long enough to beat Boswell, who was not to well placed in the running. Gold I’lignt came through on the inner from the rear of the field for third, and Shikari, last in all the early running, was a good fourth. There were several lengths of daylight to the others, headed by. Strip. Kentucky made a very poor showing.
