AFRIKAANS CAUSE

Warning Against Reliance

On Axis Victory

LONDON, November 12,

Tim speaker of the South African House of Assembly made a statement about the political iiositioii arising from the resignation of General Ilertzog from tlie leadership ot the Reunited National Barty of lite Free State. He said that though his office kept him aloof from active party polities, be tell it necessary to say that he considered a Republican form of Government best for South Africa only if it was obtained peaceably. The republic would have a sound basis only if it had the support, of all Afrikanders and lhe co-operation of a large section of the English-speaking population. He warned the Afrikanders that. it. would be fatal to follow a policy based on the expectation that Germany and Italy would win the war, and even if they did win. there was no guarantee that Germany and Italy would lie ready to act according to the desires of those who thought that such a victory would help the Afrikaans cause. Nor would there be any guarantee of more liberty to defend and advance the interests of tlie Afrikanders than there had been in Hie |ins!.
