RAIDS OVER WIDE AREA

From Danzig To Bay Of Biscay HEAVIEST ATTACK NEAR DRESDEN (Received November 12. 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 11. The Air Ministry has announced that, despite severe storms and icing conditions, the R.A.F. last night carried out one of its most extensive night operations so far. it raided targets ranging from the Baltic to the Bay of Biscay, penetrated into Poland, attacked military objectives near Danzig and also bombed oil-storage centres located over wide areas- of Germany and the occupied territories.

The heaviest raid was directed against an oil refinery near Dresden, which was showered witii incendiary bombs from the first raiders. The resultant tires guided the following raiders. High-explosive bombs hit the refinery buildings and caused great fires.

Dresden itself was bombed tor the first time, targets including gas, water and electricity installations. Large fires broke out at one of the city’s main railway junctions. Dow clouds hampered the raiders over north-east Germany. A large railway junction near Danzig was attacked and the R.A.F. also launched a prolonged attack on the important oil refinery at Gelsenkirchen, repeatedly scoring direct hits and starting fires. Other raiders started a large fire at the Duisburg wharves and bombed the railway junction and sorting yard at Mannheim, the Fokker aircraft factor.' at Amsterdam, a railway junction at Dessau, also docks at Kiel and Antwerp. Raids against Lorient lasted nearly three hours, and many sticks of heavy bombs were dropped on the submarine base, which is believed to have been considerably damaged. Other bombers hit a 2000-ton ship lying at Le Havre, also docksides at Flushing, despite a snowstorm. Fifteen aerodromes were attacked in Germany and occupied territories,_ including those at Amiens and Lille, where heavy bombs burst in the midst of aerodrome buildings: also at Emden, where fires were started among sheds and hangars. Five of our aircraft tire missing.
