ENGLAND’S SPIRIT

Whole Country Working As One CONFIDENCE IN VICTORY “We have had blow after blow financially, and have had to make, and shall continue to make, sacrifices till we have seen the job on hand through and come out on top, as we certainly will, because right must prevail in the end,” writes the head of a London business firm to a friend in Wellington. “The whole country is working as one,” he continues, “and with the wonderful support of the Dominions, in fact the whole Empire, we shall carry on the fight till oppression has been stamped out. “Some people think that the British are slow to move, but once they start on anything they see it through to the bitter end, as we certainly shall this time. “I have raised and taken command of a company of the local Defence Force Volunteers, now the Home Guard, and mine was the first one to be inspected by His Majesty tbe King. I have a wonderful company, one to be proud of, as they include 75 per cent, of ex-service men. many with distinctions from 1914-18. I have not had a free evening for over 12 weeks, but we are ready for anything. Now I have to leave my company and take command of a battalion, a very full sparetime job. “Our Air Force is wonderful. New Zealand, Australia and Canada are supplying just the fellows we want, as they did before, and we can only hope that before long they will be able to return home covered with glory, as they did before. “Conditions are, of course, difficult, and thank goodness you understand our difficulties. Wc have to do more than twice as much work with buying and shipments, but shall continue to do all we can to support you to our utmost.”
