Selfridges (Australasia)
Mr. J. M’. Austin, the chairman of directors of Selfridges (Australasia), Lid., informed shareholders at the annual meeting in Sydney last week, that with regard to the proposed writing down ot the company’s assets, it was felt that, though certain assets were not represented by tangible backing, the time was not now opportune to make any reduction of capital, in view of existing and contemplated Government restrictions relating to dividend limitation and general capital and taxation matters. Following a further application for the listing of the company’s shares on the various stock exchanges of Australia, the chairman said that notification had been received that all the Stock Exchanges concerned had approved of the listing subject to minor alterations to the company s articles of association. These alterations could be made at the next annual meeting so that actual listing should be finalized at an early date.
Mr. Austin stressed the fact of a profit of £18,666 having been earned during the past y.ear, in contrast will) losses during the two previous years. He added that the two associated companies were now on n protilmaking basis, and though 'ictual profits were not commensurate with capital invested, it was felt that the corner had been turned and the capital of the various companies would at least be preserved.
