Heavy Rain In Wairarapa And Hawke’s Bay

Heavy rain fell all day in the Wairarapa, and drains in parts of Masterton Borough appeared to have difficulty in carrying off the stormwater, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. A good deal of surface water was in evidence on flat paddocks, but no flooding had. occurred up to last evening. Rivers remained surprisingly low. ami even at nightfall there was no sign of discolouration. It is possible that falls in the ranges will take a considerable time to reach the plains, in which case the rivers may rise suddenly during the night.

A large slip is reported to have come down on tin- Wellington side- of the Rimutaka hill, but the road is still passable. Surface water is pouring across the main road through the ranges in a number of places, but the afternoon service car expeHenced no trouble in getting through to Masterton. The heaviest rain experienced for some months in Hawke's Bay fell throughout. Wednesday night and till yesterday afternoon, when it gave indications of clearing. The ground was in a receptive state for heavy tails after a long, dry period, and rivers had shown surprisingly little response to Hie downpour. Surface water was to be seen about the town and country areas in fairly large quantities, but it was not. expected to lie for long. Prospect of Flooding. Dannevirkc and district was subjected to heavy and continuous rain from early morning, with cold conditions and heaw t'hunderand lightning late in the afternoon. All streams were running high, and last, night there was a.prospect of some flooding. Extremely heavy rain had been falling in Central Hawke’s Bay in the past 21" hours, said a message from Waipukur.au last night. 11 inches being recorded. The temperature remained fairly high. Hie maximum yesterday being 51 degrees. Rivers had risen. Wanganui bad steady rain all day. accompanied by. very rough seas, but in Palmerston North only showers fell.
