PERSONAL

Captain W. E. Parry, C. 8., R.N., is visiting Wellington. Commander W. G. Morrison arrived al Wellington yesterday morning by the steamer express. Mr. B. Sutherland was a passenger from the south by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr. L. J. Wild, Feilding, is in Wellington for a meeting of the National Council of Primary Production. Mr. J. Murphy, Wellington, has been granted the status of (associate public accountant) in the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Mr. R. S. 11. Buchanan, who for nine years has been honorary secretary of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, was this week elected an honorary life member of the association.

Mr. W. L. Newnham, Second Assistant Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, has been appointed deputy-chairman of the Main Highways Board. He succeeds Mr. A. J. Baker, who has resigned from the board.

Major S. Al. Satterthwaite, N.Z.S.C., commandant of the District Military School, Burnham, has been appointed second in command of the 25th (Wellington) Battalion, and will take up his new duties at Trenthain next Tuesday. Captain R. J. Eyre will fill the position vacated by Major Satterthwaite.

The Rev. Father P. Timoney, who for the last 18 years has been attached Io the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Bnrbadoes Street. Christchurch (for the last eight years as administrator), was given a presentation by Cathedral parishioners at a well-attended gathering in the school hall this week. Father Timonev has recently taken control of St. Joseph’s parish, Papnnui. The chairman of the Cathedral Parish Schools’ Committee. Mr, Peter O’Connell, presided, and he and other speakers praised the work Father Timoney had done for the parish and its parishioners. Mr. A. G. C. Deuber, Assistant British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, is presently returning to the Department of Overseas Trade, London. He came to New Zealand a year and n half ago from Vancouver, where he was aeting-Trade Commissioner for a year ami a half, having been sent from i.omlon to fill that position. Mrs. Deuber will accompany him on his return to I.omlon. During his stay in Wellington Mr. Deuber has associated himself with local dramatic effort and in his brief time on the Wellington stage has played many parts, and those with distinction.
