CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB
Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. The annual report of the Canterbury Jockey Club states that the year’s operations resulted in a loss of £791, as against a considerable profit the previous year. This loss is largely accounted for by a reduction of more than £5OOO in the revenue, because of the Government’s decision to discontinue the rebate to the clubs of one per cent, of totalizator investments and to the cost of reconditioning the club’s private railway line from Sockburn to the racecourse.. Stakes were again increased, and in the. circumstances, the position must be considered as quite satisfactory.
Beau Pere Leading Sire. As the stock of Beau Pere have won about £24,000 it seems fairly certain the Son-in-Law horse will head the season’s list of winning sires. Vaals and Hunting Song are about £7OOO below him, but during the winter months should at least reduce the gap. Vaals has a small lead of Hunting Song at present, and both beget good winter horses. Other horses who are prominently placed on the list arc Siegfried, Foxbridge and Nightmarch.
Rider Injured. ■While schooling over hurdles on iuesday in preparation for the Poverty Bay meeting next. Saturday, Small Boy crashed through a hurdle, throwing his rider, T. Ahuriri, heavily. Aliuriri, who is attached to trainer I. Tinsley’s stable, was later admitted to hospital suffering a double fracture to the right shoulder. Small Boy escaped injury, although he ■broke the" hurdle completelj- in half.
