Fully 500 applications for a day’s employment as polling clerks and other officials at the Auckland West byelection on May 18 have been received by tlie returning officer, Mr. 11. C. Butcher. About 100 positions have to be filled, but on tho day following the announcement of the by-election alone 240 persons applied for the jobs, and several hundred others have since made similar inquiries. One man did not wait, for the issue of the writ for tlie poll, but dispatched an application on tlie day following the deatli of the late Prime .Minister, Mr. Savage, who held the Auckland West seat.
