NEW SOVIET DEFENCE COMMISSAR

Voroshilov Superseded (Received May S, 10.15 p.m.) . MOSCOW, May 8. The Tass Agency says that Marshal Voroshilov, the Defence Commissar, has been replaced by Marshal Semyon Timoshenko, commander of the Kiev military district. Marshal Voroshilov has been appointed assistant chairman of the Council of Commissars and chairman of the council’s defence committee.

[Voroshilov’s name first became publicly known, though obscurely, during the civil war in Russia which followed the Revolution of the previous year, he then being the commander of a detachment of Red soldiers engaged against the White ’’Army. In 1925 Voroshilov was elected Commissar of War, and in 1933 was created marshal when ranks and stripes were reinstated by Stalin. He was one of five marshals appointed at that time.]
