MORE PRODUCTION
Farmers’ Response To Appeal BOARD CHAIRMAN’S TRIBUTE Dominion Special Service. CARTERTON, April 8. A call to farmers to assist in increasing production wherever they possibly could do so, and a tribute to the way in which so many farmers had already done so, was made yesterday at a meeting of dairy-farmers in Carterton, by Mr. W. E. Hale, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Board. “1 do most earnestly urge you,” he said, “to do everything you can to increase production, particularly pig production. I realize that already the farmers have responded, frequently at considerable personal inconvenience. Mr. Hale said that he knew from personal experience how difficult it was for many farmers to increase their production. It spoke volumes for the efficiency of the dairy-farmer that production had actuallj been increased on a reduced number of cows in milk. The result was due In part to a very satisfactory season, but be knew that farmers had responded generously to the call for increased production, and had in fact adopted the suggestion made that advantage should be taken of the good summer to make greater quantities of hay. Much the same position obtained in regard to pigs, for though there had been a considerable drop in the total number of pigs killed, the reduction, on a weight basis, was much less, due to farmers having adopted the suggestion that they should keep their pigs to bacon weights where possible. That satisfactory position had been considerably assisted by the action of the Government in making cheap barley supplies available to the producers.
