CANTEEN PROFITS

Reserved For Men Of Armed Forces

An assurance that'auy profits derived from canteens were being reserved exclusively for the benefit of the men of the armed forces themselves was given yesterday by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, when referring to the operations of canteens and the distribution of canteen profits. “In connexion with the operations of canteen profits, in the naval, military, and Air Force camps throughout the Dominion.” said the Minister, “I am pleased to say that the arrangements are proceeding satisfactorily and that special attention is being given t.o the provision of full facilities and the Yutiuing of the canteens on economical lines. Tlie services given in the canteens have been gradually extended and no effort will be spared in the arrangement of further improvements.

“I would, however, like to emphasize particularly the fact that any profits derived from the canteens are being reserved exclusively for the benefit of the men themselves. There is no question of absorbing any part of this profit for any other purpose but directly tn the interests of the men in camps and their comrades abroad. A special Canteen Board was :et up last year ana this board is charged witli 'he supervision of the canteens. Every penny of profit will be used in the interests of the men who are making so much sacrifice to serve their country. Several distributions of profit have already been made, both within New Zealand and for units overseas, and furl her allocations will be approved from rime to time. Should there lie any undistributed profit at tne conclusion of the war it will be distinctly reserved and held for the benefit of the naval, military, and Air Force units. “Tlie canteens' have been enthusiastically supported by tlie men in the en.nps and they can continue this support with confidence in the knowledge that any surplus from the operations of tlie canteens belongs to the members of the New Zealand forces. “The business transactions in connexion with the whole canteen organization uro subject to strict liiianeial control and audit by the Government,’ added Mr. Jones.
