AWAPUNI TRACKS
Clarion Cali Goes Well Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N„ May 8. Recent rains made the track very heavy and in tlie circumstances horses being prepared for the Otaki meeting were let off with light tasks. The course proper was available, the flags being wide out. There was no work on the plough, the going being unsuitable. Hunting Lore and Kincora went freely over five furlongs, which occupied 1.12. A win for the former would he popular, as he has on so many occasions been beaten narrowly. Clarion Call, looking in great heart, bowled along in convincing style over a round. If an important hurdle or steeplechase event comes this way during the winter months, it will be through the efforts of the versatile son of Hunting Song. , , , Both Colonel Bogey and Aurora s Star bear a greatly improved appearance, and if looks go for anything their prospects of notching some place money are not far off. They were not bustled in a run over seven furlongs, finishing the last six, full of running, in 1.26. Brazil and Harbour Bar were restricted to a seven-furlong gallop, the final six in 1.27}, the former showing to advantage. Without being set any exacting tasks Aurora’s Love is getting through a lot of useful work. The way in which she has developed and muscled up in recent months suggests that she may fully repay her trainer, Jim Waller, later on. Classform is among the daily workers, and is doing everything required. Inform, in the same stable, is shaping up nicely. The daughter of Inflation will be seen out at the Otaki fixture. Classform’s next outing will probably be at the Manawatu raeetin o ’. Among those that went through routine work were Thrasos, Don Quex, Sporting ■Gift, Francis Drake, Boniden, Peach King, Gold Chase, Catalogue, Luath, Amyas Leigh, Quadroon, Moradabad, Renascor and Selkirk. During the past few days there has been some activity in the jumping department. W. Jenkins, who has steered many winners in flat events since taking up residence in Palmerston, was seen out in a new role the other morning. He piloted a hunter (a full-brother to Old Surrey), from L. G. Morris’ stable, over a few battens which without creating any particular impression, jumped confidently. Mick the Miller (W. Pine) traversed two rounds, negotiating four brush and two hencoops, and the manner in which he got through his task indicates that he will be useful in this branch. Ruaform (W. Pine) performed a similar task and gave a good display. High Peer went well over three hurdles. Ted Pine has his charge in good shape. Shining Hours is steadily making heaaway in the jumping business, there being a great improvement on recent efforts. Ag the going is now easy, she is keen to put more dash into her exer- ° Old Surrey (P Rae) was accompanied by Harbour Bar (W. Pine) in a school•ng bout over four hurdles. Old Surrey is one of the most improved hurdlers in training. With experience he should develop good form over the battens, and he promises to reveal improvement the next time he is produced. Harbour Bar, who has been seen out at the Manawatu Hunt meets, is also an inmate of Mrs. McDonald’s stable. H. Thomson, who a while back was private trainer for Mr. H. E. Edmunds, ig now following his calling on his own account. He has King Mestor under his guidance, and in the course of a few days will have two other horses in his <‘are. Thomson’s team will be quartered in Mr. W. Bailey’s stables at Awapuni.
