IMPORT CONTROL

Expiry Of Licences For Second Period DELAYED SHIPMENTS Statement By Minister Of Customs The period during which imports may be made under licences issued for the second licensing period will expire on June 30. The licences were originally issued for the period July-December, 1939, but were subsequently made valid till June 30. Because of the uncertainty attaching to the date of departure of ships from the United Kingdom and the date of their arrival in New Zealand under existing conditions, importers have been in some doubt as to their position in arranging for the shipment of goods covered by second period licences in view of the possibility of their not arriving till after the end of June. Representations have been made to the Minister of Customs, Mr. Nash, who stated in an interview last evening that the question bad been carefully considered and that in the light of all the circumstances it had been decided to permit tlie entry under second period licences of goods shipped on vessels scheduled to leave tlie United Kingdom not later than May 29. Should it so happen that departure of the vessels was delayed beyond the scheduled dale and they arrived after June 30, the goods would nevertheless be admitted. “This should assist both exporters in the United Kingdom and importers in making definite arrangements regarding shipment,” said Mr. Nash. _
