SOLDIERS’ ESTATES

Suggestion Of Injustice A sharebroker member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, in a letter read at last night’s council meeting, referred to what he described as a grave injustice in respect of death duties on the estates of soldiers. It was stated that there was a £5OOO exemption in the case of a deceased soldier leaving an estate in favour of ins wife or children, but there was none ot any kind where a soldier left his estate to other members of his family, brothers, nephews and so on. _ If the principle of reduced estate duties was recognized in,the case of a soldier leaving an estate in favour of his sons, why should it not be recognized in tlie case of a soldier leaving money to Ins brothers, or nephews, or any friends whom he might wish to assist. Mr M. F. Luckie said that at any time there had been a general concession of succession duty exemption on estates up fo £5OOO left by a husband iu favour of his wife.. It was decided to refer tbe letter to tbe Associated Chambers of Commerce.
