The British Market
Sir, —"Englishman,” in his letter in yesterday morning’s paper, rather gives the impression that there is nothing to fear from the competition of margarine with butter on the English market. Let mo quote figures given in the Imperial Economic Committee’s “Dairy Produce Supplies, 1038,” showing the trend of consumption of butter and margarine per head in the United Kingdom in recent years:
How can “Englishman” answer up to this?—l am, etc., TRUTH. Wellington, May 7. Sir, —1 am a regular reader of your paper and was interested in the comments of tile British markets made by “Englishman” in the issue of today. May 7. In a recent letter from England, my brother, who farmed in New Zealand for 10 years, made some interesting remarks on the serious effect of our import restrictions. He mentions one instance of tt large factory which was placarded with advertising •slogans urging its workers to buy New Zealand butter, lamb, etc. The firm Ims now taken down the placards ami does not encourage the purchase of New Zealand goods. 1 think you wit! agree Um: they cannot be blamed. In one instance of this import legislation, I think the Government is depriving the old and the sick of their only way of keeping warm these winter months. I refer to hot water bottles, which are practically unprocurable, 1 know of one case when the wife of a very ill man found it impossible to purchase a hot water bottle, and 1 feel that is not fair to the helpless.—l am, etc., REGULAR READER. Wellington, May 5.
